The spawning of an idea

I would have to say that the 3 years that I worked for in the FSC has been some of the most inspiring. It has been due to meeting people who are passionate about travel and environmental issues and hearing some of their tales of their trips that spawned the idea of a Trans European Bike Ride.

Before I started at the field centre I only had one bike and that is built for speed. I have always enjoyed cycling, but I mainly just used to go out for a days ride or enter time trials. But thanks to the likes of Nigel Coles and Chris Avent (featured in the pictures below of our Plymouth to Ilfracombe ride) I started to become interested into touring cycling and thus the purchase of bike number 2, Georgia May Dawes (A Dawes Horizon touring bike). Hearing of their cycling adventures it made me want to get out there and see a bit more by bike. So I set out on my solo Lands End to John O' Groats and I loved it.

This combined with the ideals that I had started to adopt after working in a field centre for 2 years such as; save money on hair gel by not washing it (You'll get that messed up look you require soon enough), is deodorant really necessary and do I need a shower if I'm going to a river today, set in motion the idea of a greater ride.

I look forward to the days ahead of cycling though different lands in pleasant sun shine and a gentle tail wind pushing me along. But knowing my luck it will be more like the Bike ride of 2005 in the wettest August in resent records and cycling into strong head winds(An interesting time, due to those conditions I looked and smelt like a wet, wind blown dog)

But what ever the conditions I look forward to it and will keep you posted.
